How does Hulu Work?

Hulu is a bit more complicated to use than other streaming services, especially if you’re subscribed to a Hulu + Live TV plan. Essentially though, it works the same, with a remote server that houses the content.

You connect to this server on your device (mobile phone, tablet, smart TV, etc.) and start streaming.

How does Hulu Work?

No matter which plan you choose, you will have to answer a few questions before you can start streaming the first time.

This is largely to see what kind of content you’re interested in for recommendations, and it can be skipped if you want to start streaming even sooner.

If you’re a Hulu + Live TV subscriber, you have to set up a home network in order to gain access to local TV channels. You can only have one Home network, but you can change it up to four times a year for free.

You will not be able to stream TV stations on non-mobile devices while away from your Home network.

In order for the streaming services to work smoothly, you will also need a solid internet connection. Here are the recommended internet speeds for Hulu:

3.0 Mbps — Recommended speed for standard streaming.

8.0 Mbps — Recommended speed for live TV streaming.

16.0 Mbps — Recommended speed for UHD (4K) streaming.

Hulu Basic

The first is the most basic version of Hulu, which will cost you $5.99 a month. This version will give you access to Hulu’s full library, next-day episodes of most network shows, the most complete collection of FX content on streaming, and Hulu and FX on Hulu’s originals. But this base version also comes with ads.

Hulu (No Ads)

If you pay just a few dollars more those ads disappear. Hulu without ads costs $11.99 a month. Much like with the base version of Hulu, it won’t give you access to Hulu’s live TV offerings but you can watch all of the streaming service’s library content and originals.

Hulu + Live TV

Have you been missing the joys of live television? Then this next tier is for you. Thanks to Hulu + Live TV you can have access to over 60 top channels including ABC, Fox, NBC, CBS, The CW, CNN, A&E, Animal Planet, Bravo, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, ESPN, and HGTV.

This option is great for anyone who wants to cut the cord but still wants to watch live sports. The most basic version of Hulu + Live TV will run you $64.99 a month. But that version comes with commercials.

Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV

That brings us to the most expensive Hulu plan. You can currently sign up for Hulu + Live TV without commercials for $70.99 a month. Though that price may seem steep it’s still a lot cheaper than the days of cable.

How to Change Your Hulu Plan

Changing your Hulu plan is simple. Once you’ve signed up for Hulu, simply head to your Account page. From there, scroll down to the “My Subscription” section and click on the “Manage Plan” link. Here you can toggle between the four different plans listed above.

Does Hulu Have a Free Trial?

It certainly does. No matter which version of Hulu you sign up for you can experience the streaming service for free. The basic versions of Hulu are the most generous when it comes to free trials.

Does Hulu Have a Free Trial?

At the moment you can try out the basic version of Hulu and the basic version of Hulu without ads for 30 days without paying a dime. These versions give subscribers access to Hulu’s vast library, next-day episodes, and originals, but they do not include live TV.

That’s because Hulu + Live TV has a free trial of its own. Both versions of Hulu + Live TV the version with and without ads come with a weeklong free trial.

That gives you seven whole days to figure out if this elevated streaming option is for you.

What is Hulu Premium?

Hulu Premium is the company’s ad-free streaming service. For $11.99 a month, you’ll get access to their entire on-demand catalog that you can binge without the inconvenience of commercials.

Each of the premium channels include that network’s streaming library as well as access to all of their original content. They’re available for an additional monthly cost. Here are the ones Hulu currently has:

HBO Max: $14.99 a month

Cinemax: $9.99 a month

Showtime: $4.99 a month for 6 months (then $10.99/mo)

STARZ: $8.99 a month

What is the difference between Hulu Basic and Hulu Premium?

Hulu Premium is $11.99 a month, while Hulu Basic is $5.99 a month.

Hulu Premium is, in most experiences, completely uninterrupted and ad-free. Due to a streaming agreement, there’s a small exception.

What is the difference between Hulu Basic and Hulu Premium?

Just three shows — “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” and “How To Get Away With Murder” — will play short ads before and after the episodes, but will still play uninterrupted during their stream. Other than that, you will never see an ad on Hulu Premium.

Hulu Basic, on the other hand, serves you unskippable ads before and during your stream. A 30-minute show will often play one ad beforehand and will have two ad breaks during the show, amounting to roughly 5 minutes of total ad time.

An hour-long show will have an ad at the beginning and an average of five ad breaks per show, amounting to about 10 minutes of ad time.

Both Premium and Basic get access to Hulu’s entire on-demand content catalog. Whether you choose Basic or premium is entirely up to whether you can tolerate being interrupted by ads.

If you’d prefer a seamless streaming experience, Hulu Premium is well worth it. I personally pay for the Premium version of Hulu because I’ve grown so used to ad-free streaming that I can’t go back to being interrupted by ads, even if it saves me a bit of cash.

The convenience and user friendliness of the ad-free service more than makes up for the difference in price.

finally, you see why you should try out Hulu streaming for your next subscription, its packages are cheap and affordable and you get a chance to select which and how to program your streaming.
