The Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry is at the University of the Pacific. It offers a unique program in the marketplace. Also, you can attend for only three years and get your dental degree. You can compare this to the four years of education other schools require.
History of UOP Dental School
The UOP dental school was founded in 1896. It was founded as the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Then it offered programs in dentistry, medicine, and pharmacy.
In 1918, the college focused its education program solely on dentistry. However, it retained its name as the College of Physicians and Surgeons. This was until it was incorporated into the University of the Pacific.
In 2004 the school was named in honor of Arthur A. Dugoni. He was a former president of the American Dental Association. Also, he served 28 years as dean.
However, despite rumors in 2008 that the Advanced General Dentistry Clinic located in Stockton would close due to a lack of public funding the clinic remained open.
The dental school has twelve clinics open. These schools were within San Francisco, Oakland, Union City, and Stockton. Also, it still relies heavily upon the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act funding.
This is in order to provide services for patients with HIV/AIDS. This funding is used to reimburse the school for services provided. However, it has not increased in recent years despite increased costs of providing services.

Comparing The Cost of UOP Dental School with Loan/Inflation Rate
You may ask: Is the cost of UOP Dental School the list price? Or, is it what you’ll actually leave within debt if you attend? When considering the cost you need to add inflation. After all, generally, the price level goes up by 2 to 4 percent historically. Tuition tends to advance faster than that.
Additionally, you have to pay origination fees on the above amounts. Also, you can only use $40,500 of Stafford Unsubsidized loans in a calendar year. As such, the majority of the above balances go to Grad PLUS loans.
A Stafford Unsubsidized Loan has an upfront fee of about 1.06%. Also, the Grad PLUS fee is about 4.25%. This is of the amount borrowed.
On top of that, interest accrues on the balance every year. So the 6.6% Stafford and 7.6% Grad PLUS rates pile up the accrued interest balance. Also, for the second year, we can multiply $161,348 by 1.03.
Furthermore, it is done for the third year’s $160,181. We can multiply by 1.03 squared. Let’s take 3% as an average loan fee.
Also, let’s assume the average interest rate is 7%. And the interest costs for the first year accrue for three years. The second-year for two years. And the third year for one year. Here’s the loan amount you’ll leave with and what year it would be attributed to:
- First Year=$213,983.
- Second Year=195,138.
- Third Year=187,286.
The projected Loan Total will then be $596,408. Please note: This is for adjustments made for loan cost and inflation.
UOP Dental School Three Year Curriculum

Furthermore, students at the school experience a number of hours of clinical education. This is well above the national average for students studying in traditional four (4) year curricula. Also, this is despite the accelerated curriculum.
