Scholarships for SC Residents

While these awards generally cannot be combined with one another, The Office of Undergraduate Admissions provides a number of general university scholarships based on your entry qualifications.

In addition, the State of South Carolina provides the lottery-funded HOPE, LIFE, and Palmetto Fellows Scholarships to qualified residents of South Carolina.

State Scholarships for S.C. Residents

The state awards several different types of lottery-funded scholarships to eligible South Carolina residents. Any one of the awards listed in this section can be added to any university-issued scholarship.

These awards include the following but are not limited to Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, LIFE Scholarship, Palmetto Fellows and LIFE Scholarship Enhancements, and South Carolina HOPE Scholarship, etc.

Scholarships for Nonresidents

Awarded through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, there are a variety of scholarships for non-South Carolina resident freshmen, many of which include tuition reduction.

The University of South Carolina offers a generous array of scholarships for non-S.C. resident freshmen, which are awarded through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

When you apply for admission to the University of South Carolina, you are automatically considered for merit scholarships. These scholarships are only awarded to first-time freshmen entering the fall semester.

Only one Admissions Merit Award per individual is allowed for nonresidents, with the exception of the Provost Scholars Award, which can be added to any other award listed in this section.

Departmental Scholarships

Departmental scholarships are most often awarded to continuing students who have demonstrated excellence in meeting the eligibility criteria. However, some departments also award scholarships to incoming freshmen.

Most departmental scholarships are awarded to returning students, but you can check the scholarship database. Each college or school has its own application process.

General University Scholarships

General University Scholarships are awarded by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to incoming freshmen who will enhance the academic profile and diversity of their class and the University.

Selection Tips

  • Selection is made on the basis of their weighted core grade point average and standardized test scores as defined in University Policy No. ADM 9.58. 
  • Provost Scholars are awarded solely on the basis of students’ designations by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) as National Merit Finalists.
  • To be awarded, such students should list the University of South Carolina as their institution of choice to NMSC. Students listed as National Hispanic Recognition Program scholars may also receive a Provost Scholar.
  •  Recipients must be admitted to a University of South Carolina degree-seeking program of study.
  • Note that Financial need is not a criterion for selection.
  • Recipients may receive only one General University Scholarship with the following exceptions: Provost Scholar, Presidential Scholar, and USC STEM Supplement.
  • Recipients may receive a State of South Carolina-funded scholarship in addition to their General University Scholarship pursuant to state regulations governing their scholarship programs.
  • State of South Carolina-funded scholarships are restricted to residents who are United States citizens or verified legal permanent residents at the time of high school graduation.
  • Students who are legal residents of the state of South Carolina are eligible to be considered for general university scholarships.
  • Students who are not legal residents of the state of South Carolina and who are lawfully present in the United States are eligible to be considered for general university scholarships provided that funds are available.
  • Students who are not legal residents of the state of South Carolina and who are lawfully present in the United States but do not live in the state of South Carolina will be classified as non-residents for tuition purposes and may receive a scholarship that includes tuition reduction, if eligible.
  • Students who are not legal residents of the state of South Carolina and who live in the state of South Carolina (i.e. cannot receive SC State Scholarships).
  • If you enter the United States with an appropriate visa that qualifies the students to pay tuition at in-state rates, you will be considered for general university scholarships.
