About McDonald’s

McDonald’s has operated in the UK since 1974 and the business is growing consistently with around 1,270 restaurants and over 120,000 employees.

It is the biggest family restaurant business in the world, serving approximately 3.7 million customers a day in the UK alone.

Training and developing people has always been at the heart of the McDonald’s business and each year the company invests over £40 million in developing its people and providing opportunities for progression.

Attracting, keeping, and engaging the best people is key and prospective managers create a long-term career with one of the world’s most recognized and successful brands.

A graduate job at McDonald’s is focused on restaurant management–it involves overseeing the performance and development of large teams and identifying ways in which to improve customer service, and build sales and profitability.

Following the training period, which can last up to six months, trainee managers are promoted to assistant managers and become part of the core restaurant management team.

Successful trainee managers can progress to managing all aspects of a £ multi-million business – opportunities can then arise to progress to area management roles or secondments in support departments.

Trainee managers need to be logical thinkers, have a great attitude, and be committed to delivering a great customer experience.

Overview of McDonald’s Process

  1. You can apply in-person or online at McDonald’s website after you search for the store you want.
  2. The application is sent to McDonald’s Human Resources if you apply to a corporate store, or the owner if the store is franchised.
  3. In a corporate store, the regional manager will call you and set up an interview. In a franchise store, the application is sent to the store manager. If the store manager feels the applicant is a fit then they will call you for an interview.
  4. The interview process will then begin. You will sit down with the hiring manager for the store to talk to them. They will look at a variety of things about you (which I will not write as it is proprietary) before deciding to hire you or not.
  5. If you pass the final interview, you will be hired at your agreed-upon rate. Then, you will be scheduled for your orientation.

McDonald’s Job Application

The first step to getting a job is to submit an application. Those interested can find the forms to apply online or in-store. Experiences are unnecessary, but note any past food service work for help to land a McDonald’s audition.

Job Assessment Test

McDonald’s offers a screening process to decide the candidates that will be picked to attend an interview afterward.

This screening process is a personality assessment test, and it is given to applicants in order to screen out those individuals who have the potential to become staff at McDonald’s.

Applicants who perform very well at the screening test are usually called to take the next step in the hiring process – and interview with the hiring manager.

The McDonald’s Interview Process

Applicants usually hear within a week. During the initial phone interview, establish a time and date to meet. Plan to arrive early to impress the staff and get a sense of the restaurant.

Interview Formats

The specific type of McDonald’s job interview depends on the store or district. Regardless of the format, hopefuls must take the time to prepare and gain confidence.

Walk-In Interviews

Sometimes, people pursuing entry-level jobs skip the application process. These candidates may opt for walk-in style McDonald’s interviews. Candidates should dress well and bring along a polished resume.

Group Interviews

If a particular McDonald’s has multiple jobs to fill quickly, there could be a group interview. Always be courteous and professional to stand out from the crowd.

One-On-One Interviews

Solo interviewees talk to hiring managers for about 15 minutes. Though McDonald’s interviews are low-key, job seekers should try their best to impress. Bring extra resumes, prepare interview question answers, and wear nice clothes.

The Interview

Getting called for an interview means that it is your time to shine. It should be easy as long as you prepare. Bring your identification and your social security card. You may not need these until orientation but it will show the interviewer that you think ahead and are ready.

During the interview make sure to smile and speak clearly. Most of the questions will surround your past jobs and experiences. Some of the other five common questions as well as responses are listed below.

1. Where do you see yourself in five years, and why would you be good at this position?

This question is asked to assess your career goals and to judge if you will be a suitable fit for the company. If your future aspirations involve working in a restaurant in any capacity, then inform the manager that you would be gaining valuable experience in the industry.

If you plan on attending college, then this job would provide the perfect opportunity to earn some cash towards your education. Your degree could put you in a prime position to own manage your own restaurant or work in the corporate sector in the future.

2. Have you ever worked for in the fast-food business or in a fast-paced environment?

If you have no experience, you could say:

  • “I am a fast and willing learner who is looking forward to becoming familiar with both the functions of the lobby and the drive-thru.”
  • “I’m looking forward to the challenges involved with this environment and the valuable skill set that will have the opportunity to develop during my time here.”

3. What are your weaknesses?

One strategy for this question is to phrase your answer in a way to make your so-called weakness appear to be positive. You could say:

  • “I try to please everyone.”
  • “I am too critical of myself.”

Your interview may be hip to these sorts of answers, so do not be afraid, to be honest about your response. This shows good self-awareness. Just be sure to reveal no information that would deem you a risk to the company.

4. Why should I hire you?

This question could also be worded as “what are your strengths?” Be ready to provide examples from either a work or school setting if prompted.

  • “I work well when under pressure.”
  • “I have great teamwork skills.”
  • “I have excellent communication skills.”

5. Why do you want to work here?

The obvious answer would be “to make money,” but that isn’t what the interviewer wants to hear. Be sure to put some thought into your answer.

  • “I grew up on McDonald’s and want to prove myself to the #1 restaurant in the world.”
  • “McDonald’s offers exceptional value for their customers and because of this, I would be proud to represent them.”

6. Do you have questions for us?

  • “What kind of training will I receive?”
  • “What are the characteristics of your top performers?”
  • “What do you like best about working at McDonald’s?”

McDonald’s Orientation Process

Orientation is a process you will pass through before you work at McDonald’s just like other employees. The orientation involves networking and learning with other experts working at the company.
