Google Maps is a useful navigation tool on almost any device that is available. Google Maps is a perfect way to figure out where you are going, whether you are at home searching for a new restaurant to try, or out trying to find one.

However, some very useful characteristics make it even more useful. The pin-dropping feature, which allows you to easily mark locations on the map, is one of these.

Dropping Pins in Google Maps on Mobile

The new version of Google Maps has made it much easier to drop a pin from the search box, which actually immediately drops a pin, whether or not you want to.

It assumes you want a pin dropped there if you are looking for a specific address. So, when you use the search box to locate an address, count on a pin being automatically deposited there.

You still have to tap and hold if you are using the map interface instead of the search box to find a location.

Step 1:

Open the Google Maps app on your iPhone or Android phone.

Step 2:

Search for an address using the search bar at the top of the screen or scroll around the map until you find the location where you want to drop a pin.

Step 3:

Press and hold the screen to drop a pin. A light touch is all that’s needed.

Step 4:

Tap the pin to get directions to that location and share or save them.

Step 5:

To remove a pin, just pinch out, and a box at the top reading Dropped Pin or the Specific Location appears with an X on the right side. Tapping that X removes the pin.

Step 1:

Navigate to the Google Maps website.

Step 2:

Search for an address using the search bar on the upper left side of the screen or scroll around the map until you find the location where you want to drop a pin.

The search bar automatically drops a pin at the place you searched. You don’t have to do anything else.

Step 3:

Left-click the spot you want to drop the pin. You may have to zoom in or click slightly to either side of the location you want to drop a pin if there is already a marker there.

A small grey pin will appear, as well as an infobox at the bottom right of the screen.

Step 4:

You can press the navigation icon in the info box to get directions to the dropped pin or click anywhere else in the box to bring up more information about the location you’ve selected.

Step 5:

From the additional information screen, you can click Save to save the pin to Your Favorites, Want to Go, Starred Places, or a New List. You can view saved pins under Your Places in the main menu.

Save A Pin Location

You can save a pin’s location to a list that’s connected to your Google account. You can then access it on all your devices.

By default, three pre-made lists are available: FavouritesWant to go, and Starred places. You can add more lists (and delete the defaults) by going to Your Places in the app’s main menu.

Each list can be public or private or shared with specific other users. You can also make groups lists that anyone can add pins to— they’re useful for vacations and day trips.

Sharing a Pin in Google Maps

The Google Maps desktop app provides four ways to share a dropped pin with other users (not including the lists feature as discussed above).

On the desktop, you can either:

  • Copy and paste the automatically generated short link to share it with other people.
  • Click on the Facebook icon to share a location directly with the network.
  • Post your link in Twitter by selecting the Twitter icon.
  • Grab the HTML code to embed the map into a webpage.

If you’re sharing a dropped pin location from an Android or iOS device, you are forced to use your operating system’s native Share menu.

The embed option will not be available.

Measuring Distances in Google Maps

Another useful thing you can do on both desktop and mobile devices measures the distance from one place to another.

Although not quite as intuitive as dropping two different pins, you simply have to click the measure distance option.

On mobile devices, you just click on the box at the bottom of the screen after dropping a pin. Once you do this you just have to move the map around to measure the distance or tap new points to add.

On desktop, you just need to right-click anywhere on the screen and select measure distance. Then, with each new click, you will add a new point on the map.

The total distance will be displayed at the bottom of the screen on both types of devices.

If you found this information useful, do well to share it with friends and loved ones. It’s your turn to help other people. You can share this article on your favorite social media handle.
