American mathematics competition for Students in 2022

   – American mathematics competition –

The American Mathematics Competition with an abbreviation (AMC) are the first of chains of competitions in secondary school mathematics that defines the United States team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

The selection procedure takes place over the course of approximately four stages. At the end stage, the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOP), the United States coaches choose six members to form the IMO team.

Levels of This Competition

There are three levels:

  • the AMC 8, for students in grades 8 and below
  • the AMC 10, for students in grades 10 and below
  • and, the AMC 12, for students in grades 12 and below

Students who accomplish well on the AMC 10 or AMC 12 exams are called to partake in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME).

Students who do well on the AIME are then called to the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) or United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO).

How to Apply

  1. Log in or create an account.
  2. Choose AMC 8, 10 or 12 and place an order.
  3. Prepare your students with mathematical problem-solving skills.

What Does American Mathematics Competition Signifies?

As the name implies, AMC is the first of a series of competitions in secondary school that determine the US team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

The selection process takes place over the course of roughly four stages. At the last stage, the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP), the United States coaches select six members to form the IMO team.

Thing is, there are three levels:

  1. the AMC 8 is for students in grades 8 (Jss2 for Nigerians) and below
  2. the AMC 10 is for students in grades 10 and below
  3. the AMC 12 is for students in grades 12 and below

AMC advantage

  1. on-demand, self-paced
  2. for students of all levels
  3. skill-building problems-sets on key AMC topics and full-length mock tests

When and where do the American Mathematics Competition take place?

The AMC-8 contest happens in November, while the AMC-10 and AMC-12 occur in January or February. They are always around the same time, although the specific date may change each year.

In 2022, the 10 and 12 were on Thursday, February 4th and Wednesday, February 10th. The MAA (the competition organizers) haven’t yet announced the 2022 dates yet, but will soon.

Keep in mind, the regular registration deadline is usually about two months before the competition date, and the late entry is a month before. Sign up early, so you don’t miss your shot!

The easiest way to find out where you can take any of the AMC tests is to use the zip-code search tool on the Mathematical Association of America’s website.

What Is The Difference in The A and B Versions of The Examinations

Both the A and the B versions of the AMC 10 and the AMC 12 have the same number of questions, the same scoring and the same rules for administration.

The only differences are the competition dates and that each version has a distinct set of questions, although the two examinations are designed to be equal in difficulty and distribution of topics.

Schools can order one or both versions of the tests, so long as they pay the appropriate registration fee for each competition date, and purchase the competition bundles for each date.

Frequently Asked Question

Frequently Asked Question

Q1. What material is covered on the AMC 10 and 12

The AMC 10 covers mathematics normally associated with grades 9 and 10. The AMC 10 assumes knowledge of elementary algebra; basic geometry knowledge including the Pythagorean Theorem, area and volume formulas; elementary number theory; and elementary probability.

What are excluded are trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry. The AMC 12 covers the entire high school mathematics curriculum including the above as well as trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry but excludes calculus.

Q2. Who is Eligible to Take The AMC 10 and The AMC 12

Students with a passion for problem-solving who are in grade 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 10. Students in grade 12 or below and under 19.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 12.

Q3. Who Can Proctor The Competition

The proctoring of any AMC 10/12 should be by a teacher (preferably a mathematics teacher) or administrator at the school; a college or university teacher of mathematics, or a responsible adult such as a math club coach or librarian.

The proctoring of the exam must take place in a public building, (e.g. school, library, college or university, church). The proctor should not be related to any of the participants.

Q4. When are Official Scores and Reports Released for The AMC 10 and 12

It takes approximately three weeks from the competition date to score and report the AMC 10 and AMC 12 answer forms. Results are included in The AMC Toolkit: Results and Resources for Competition Managers link sent electronically.

The AMC office will send the results link by email as soon as the answer forms are scored.

If you have not received your results in a digital report via email from the AMC program within 30 days after competition dates, please contact AMC to verify that your answer forms were in fact received.

Q5. How do I Request a Rescore of My Answer Forms

Use the AMC 10/12 Rescoring Request Form to request a rescore. There is a $35 charge for each student answer form that is rescored.

Q6. Can I Order More Bundles Even if I’ve Already Registered My School for The AMC 10/12

Yes, use the AMC 10/12 Additional Bundles Form.

Q7. Can a Student Take Both Competitions

Yes, as long as a student is eligible to take the appropriate competitions. That is, a 10th grader or below can take the both AMC 10 A and the AMC 10 B, the AMC 12 A and the AMC 12 B, etc, and an 11th or 12th grader can take the AMC 12 A and the AMC 12 B.

However, in order to do this the school will have to register for both dates and order competition bundles for each exam.
