How to Check Your EBT Card Balance Online

If the state that issued your Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) card does not offer this service, you can check your SNAP benefits balance by phone.

You could go in person, or try reading one of your grocery store receipts.

1. Check to see if this is Legal in Your State

You can find the State EBT Websites page at https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/state-ebt-websites.

Check to see if the state that issued your food stamp card is on the list.

If your state isn’t on the list, try one of the alternatives listed below.

2. Make an Account or Sign in

The site’s exact layout is determined by your state.

Look for a link that says “Register Now,” “Create an Account,” or something similar.

If you can’t find one, simply click the “Log In” button.

Some sites don’t require you to create an account and will simply ask for your social security and/or credit card number.

3. Enter the Required Information and Press the Submit Button

To access your benefits, enter your full name and the number from your benefits card.

You’ll also need to create a username and password in order to access the site.

They may also ask you for your social security number or other information, depending on your state.

Fill out the form and, when prompted, agree to the terms and conditions.

Put your username and password somewhere safe so you don’t forget them.

4. Please Sign in to Your Account

When you create an account, it may automatically log you in.

To log in in the future, go to this site, enter your username and password, and then click Log in or a similar button.

5.  Check the Balance of Your Account

Look for a link that says Account Summary, View Balance, or something similar.

Your current food stamp balance should be displayed here.

If you see an Account Activity link, click it to see a more detailed breakdown of how you spent your food stamp funds.

6. When You’re Finished, Log out

Make sure to log out when you’re done so that no one else can access your data.

This is especially important if you are using a computer that is shared by others.

Other Ways to Check Your EBT Card Balance

1. Contact Customer Service to Check Your Balance

If your state does not provide online SNAP (food stamp) services, contact customer service.

Ask them to check your balance or advise you on how to check it in your state.

The USDA website lists toll-free phone numbers as well as websites that may offer online customer service.

To inquire about your balance, call the number listed under “Client.”

The number under “Retailer” refers to stores that accept food stamps as payment.

2. Look for Alternative Phone Numbers or Physical Office Locations

Look up “EBT contact” and the name of your state on the internet.

The number listed should be the same as the one you called previously.

But the information may also include a physical office look-up.

You can ask for a related service that may be able to assist, such as the Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC).

3. Examine a Food Stamp Purchase Receipt.

When you pay with your benefits card, they usually print your remaining balance on your receipt.

If you don’t have this, make a small purchase with your benefits card and request a receipt from the cashier.

They may print this information on the receipt under “EBT balance,” “SNAP balance,” or the name of the state-specific program (such as Quest or CalFresh).

4. Inquire with your Caseworker about Obtaining a New EBT Card.

The time it takes to receive your first SNAP (food stamp) payment varies by state.

You should always get it within 30 days of filing your application.
