More Details About Alpine A110

Even among affordable sports cars, it’s rare to come across a car so dedicated to driver involvement.

So singularly effective at it; the last time was probably the Toyota GT86 in 2012, a car to which we also gave a five-star recommendation for its supreme fitness for sucking the marrow out of every mile.

The A110 is faster, more agile, exuberant, and ultimately more enjoyable. It deserves a standing ovation.

5. Porsche 718 Boxster & Cayman

This made the list of Cheap Sports Cars.

cheap sports cars

The 718 is by far the most comprehensive mid-engined sports vehicle on the market, even with its smaller four-cylinder turbo petrol engine.

Concerns about the way the car’s crank is now turned have been aired from a variety of sources since 2016, and they’ve finally persuaded Porsche to bring back a flat-six engine for the GTS models.

Regardless of whether it’s powered by a four- or six-cylinder engine, the Boxster and Cayman have always been and continue to be great sports cars.

The four-cylinder 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter turbo flat fours that were put into service in the car in 2016 drew a lot of flak for sounding toneless.

Missing smoothness, the crispness of response, linearity, and operating range, and lacking the pure driver appeal we know Porsche for.

Also on Porsche 718 Boxster & Cayman

Porsche later returned the car’s 2.0-liter engine for WLTP compliance and introduced the Boxster and Cayman T, whose unresponsiveness exacerbated an already contentious situation.

In 2019, Porsche revived a naturally aspirated flat-six engine, in one of the most unexpected industry U-turns in recent memory.

It’s a fantastic engine by any standard–it’s based on the 3.0-liter engine from the 992 911, only bigger and without the turbos–but the long-geared manual transmission it’s paired with doesn’t suit it nearly as well as it should.

It takes a car of once-in-a-generation dynamic brilliance to beat the 718, which is practical, ever-engaging to drive, and plenty fast even in four-cylinder guise.

6. Subaru WRX

This made the list of Cheap Sports Cars 2022.

The Subaru WRX is a fun-to-drive sports sedan with rally car performance and standard of all-wheel drive.

A 268-hp turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission allow you to interact with each gear shift in 2017–2019 versions.

9. BMW M2 Competition

This made the list of Cheap Sports Cars 2022.

cheap sports cars

Until the recent launch of the extra-special M2 CS, the BMW M2 Competition was the only M2 model available in the UK.

Neither has much time left till BMW’s M2 production ends later this year.

When it does, it will force the car that has recently evolved into one of the best M cars in recent years to exit the stage.

They launched m2 Competition in 2018, the previous model’s single-turbo straight-six was replaced with a twin-turbocharged straight-six with a proper M Division ‘S’-prefixed engine code.

The engine provided significant increases in performance and responsiveness for the M2, despite being slightly detuned compared to the larger M3 and M4 models that shared it.

More on BMW M2 Competition

A handful of tweaks to the chassis and suspension mean it’s now even sharper and more controlled on battered UK roads than ever before.

When BMW M unveiled the M2 CS in late 2019, it was the first time the company’s smallest vehicle received a rigorous redesign.

The CS was also the first M2 with adaptive damping and ‘cup’ tires, and they increased power to an eye-popping 444bhp.

The car is a real bruiser, packed with muscle car attitude and supreme track day handling smarts.

But it’s also very pricey, and although interesting, it’s not quite the fluent, adaptable on-road performance car that would drive BMW to the top of this chart.

10. Toyota 86

This made the list of Cheap Sports Cars.

The Toyota 86, which is mechanically almost identical to the Subaru BRZ, is ranked seventh.

Its outward appearance, interior materials, pricing, and slight suspension tuning differences between the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ are all minor differences.

Toyota 86, as a result, has a somewhat slower 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph. A new Toyota 86 for sale starts at $28,826 on average.

Following the launching of the 2018 Subaru BRZ, Toyota has been rather silent. Contrary to common assumption, this isn’t all terrible, as Toyota wants to make sure the new 86 isn’t just another BRZ knockoff.

We were curious to know what will differentiate the BRZ and the 86, as reported by Best Car Web because it will build them on the same assembly line.

More on Toyota 86

Despite the production partnership, Toyota President Akio Toyoda directed his design team to “create a performance distinction from the BRZ.”

As a result, the Toyota variant’s introduction would most likely be postponed until next year.

As previously stated, Toyota will have a similar outward design to its Subaru counterpart. Minor alterations in the profile of the front bumper and rear combo lighting can be seen if you look attentively.

Apart from those features, the badge is the only other distinguishing feature.

It’s uncertain whether these changes will make the 86 a really distinct package, but it’s clear that both cars still do a fantastic job of scratching the craving for a cheap rear-wheel-drive sports car.

11. Lotus Elise Sport

cheap sports cars

The Lotus Elise is a fantastic car to drive if you’re in the mood.

There is absolutely nothing equivalent when it comes to immersing the driver in the mechanical process.

It features one of the world’s best-handling chassis and outstanding unassisted steering, and if you want a roof and some luxuries, there is simply nothing comparable.

This Lotus, on the other hand, is getting on in years and has gotten very pricey in its later years.

This year (2022) will be the car’s final year on the market, and the Sport 240 Final Edition will mark the end of Elise’s 25-year run. The asking price is roughly £45,000, and we expect production to wrap up before winter.

More Details on Lotus Elise Sport

Expensive? Yes. Compromised? Absolutely. Elise’s flaws are easily overlooked when you’re engrossed in the beautifully analog, tactile act of driving it.

Elise will always be exquisite in its core. With bated breath, we expect the arrival of the Emira.

The purest, most practical sports vehicle on the market remains one of the most enjoyable driving experiences available at any price.

The Elise Sport 220 combines agility, power, balance, and communication into one compact expression of pure driving pleasure, building on the many recognized Elise attributes.

This Elise Sport 220 benefits from several upgrades that result in a further 10 kg mass reduction.

To save 0.3 kg, the rear of the car now features two light clusters instead of four, merging reverse and fog lights and enhancing visual breadth.

The exposed, aluminum gearshift mechanism saves 1kg while providing faster, more precise, and intuitive gear changes.

12. Fiat 124 Spider

This made the list of Cheap Sports Cars 2022.

The Fiat 124 Spider rounds off the list, sharing a chassis and many of its underpinnings with the Mazda Miata.

A 160-horsepower powers the Fiat 124 Spider turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine. A six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, with an optional six-speed automatic transmission.

124 Spider speeds up from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds. The average price of a new Fiat 124 Spider is $22,548.

While the Mazda and the 124 Spider share much of the same architecture, the Fiat’s appearance is quite different.

More Details on Fiat 124 Spider

Overall, it’s 5 inches longer, with the majority of the extra length coming from the front and rear overhangs.

They based the styling on Pininfarina’s earlier 124 Spider, which was designed and constructed in Italy.

Inside, the design is similar to the Miata’s, right down to the infotainment system and steering wheel, but Fiat adds a layer of quality by replacing the Miata’s plastics with finer soft-touch materials.

Its engine is the most significant distinction between the two vehicles.

More on Fiat 124 Spider

Fiat has a single-overhead-cam, turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, according to Fiat-Chrysler.

The 1.4-liter isn’t quite as efficient as Mazda’s engine, despite its lower size.

It gets 25 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined with the automatic transmission and 26/35/30 mpg with the manual transmission.

Whereas both Miata models score 30 mpg combined.

13. Toyota GR Supra

This made the list of Cheap Sports Cars.

cheap sports cars

Was the Toyota Supra the year’s most eagerly expected new car? Most likely.

Toyota’s famous sports car has finally returned to the UK after a two-decade hiatus.

But it’s unlikely that this classic would have been revived if it hadn’t been for cooperation with BMW, from which they also developed the new Z4.

As a result, beneath the Supra’s attractive look, you’ll find a Bavarian-made engine, platform, transmission, slippy diff, electrics, and plenty of switchgear.

Toyota GR Supra

The Supra’s suspension, steering, and differential tuning are all distinctive, to where Toyota considers the Porsche 718 Cayman – rather than the Z4 – to be its major competitor.

Toyota, on the other hand, isn’t pulling any punches. And, in many ways, it’s the Supra that’s the better sports car.

It may not equal Porsche’s handling purity and balance, but it comes close.

More on Toyota GR Supra

It has a lot more supple ride, a smoother and more characterful engine, and is far simpler to live with on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, for those who find a £50,000-plus price tag a little too much. Toyota has recently released a little less expensive four-cylinder, 2.0-liter version of the car.

Whose handling may even benefit from the smaller engine’s relative lightness.

14. Mini Cooper Countryman

This made the list of Cheap Sports Cars 2022.

cheap sports cars

The four-door Mini Cooper Countryman is another practical sports car, combining turbocharged performance with interior comfort.

Base Cooper models have a turbocharged 1.5L three-cylinder engine with 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, but you can upgrade to a 189-horsepower 2.0L four-cylinder Cooper S or a 228-horsepower 2.0L four-cylinder John Cooper Works version.

In 2017–2019 versions, a six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, while six- and eight-speed automatic transmissions are available.

More Details About Mini Cooper Countryman

ALL4 all-wheel drive is available on the 2017–2019 Countryman for all-season traction.

The Countryman has enough room for camping gear and golf clubs, with 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 47.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down (2017–2019 models).

They include the following features as standard in the 2017–2019 Mini Cooper Countryman:
  • Moonroof

  • Leatherette upholstery

  • Rearview monitor

  • Rear parking sensors

  • Apple CarPlay capabilities (2018–2019 only)

More on Mini Cooper Countryman

The 2021 Mini Cooper S Countryman All4 is cuter than a basket of puppies, with its bug-eyed headlamps, cheeky smile, and Union Jack-inspired taillights.

Behind that cute exterior is a surprisingly elegant interior, as well as a lot more space than you’d expect from a brand whose name they link with little.

The Countryman creates a good first impression, but dig deeper and you’ll find it’s far from flawless.

15. BMW Z4 M40i

In a recent group test, the top-of-the-line BMW Z4 M40i triumphed over a lower-end Porsche 718 Boxster T.

Although we found it to be less calm, incisive, and sharp-handling than the Boxster, our testers praised it for its refinement, powerful and quick straight-six engine, and punishing straight-line speed.

The fact that it has a distinct feeling of street-fighter character adds to the BMW’s appeal.

The higher-order strains of the 718, on the other hand, offer a purer, more appealing take on an affordable sports vehicle.

More Information on BMW Z4 M40i

While the BMW offers lots of thrills, it isn’t nearly as crisp as some of the lighter, smaller competitors in this class as a precision tool.

Since 2003, the BMW Z4 has been a three-season presence on our roads.

With the arrival of the Porsche Boxster and Audi TT, as well as the Mercedes-Benz SLK, the roadster segment was in full bloom.

Some Japanese and American speedsters, such as the Nissan 350Z Roadster, Honda S2000, and Chrysler Crossfire, might be added to this all-German lineup.

More on BMW Z4 M40i

That golden age, however, would not last, and the competition in the field has significantly diminished.

We’re left with the 718 Boxster, the aged 370Z Roadster, and the Audi TT, which is currently on its last legs because of its maker’s announcement that it will be discontinued.

Needless to say, the third-generation 2020 BMW Z4 is a breath of fresh air, especially in the age of sport utility vehicles; we live in an automotive landscape that is unrecognizable from 15 years ago.

16. Audi TT

This made the list of Cheap Sports Cars 2022.

cheap sports cars

The new Audi TT appears to be the response of a firm that has spent decades defending a popular car against charges that it has all the style but none of the substance to be taken seriously by professional drivers.

It features sharper handling reflexes and lightness on its feet that its predecessors lacked, as well as a selection of engines with lots of power.

The 306bhp TT S, which uses the same four-wheel-drive power train as the excellent Mk7 VW Golf R hot hatchback (but doesn’t use the same rear torque-splitter as the Mk8 Golf R).

But is significantly lower and leaner, should be considered first by those who want usable amusement with a dose of premium design allure, delivered for a reasonable budget.

More on Audi TT

The handling is straight and nimble, and maintaining high speeds is simple –

Its 20th Anniversary Edition of the 2019 TT has a number of retro design cues inspired by the original 1995 TTS Roadster prototype.

Exterior colors are Aviator Gray or Nimbus Gray (the latter is a US-only option), with matte silver Audi emblems on the rear side sills.

The 20th Anniversary variant comes with the same clever OLED taillights as the TT RS, as well as stainless steel exhaust tips and 19-inch five-spoke alloys.

Even though the latest TT isn’t half as fashionable as its forerunner, the overall style is appealing.

17. Ford Mustang

This made the list of Cheap Sports Cars 2022.

The Mustang automobile, admittedly, has substantial disadvantages in the United Kingdom.

You’ll have to think twice about where you’ll park it in town, and you’ll need to make more trips to the gas station than your German sports car peers (unless you get a used version with the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine).

But no other car at this price has such an obvious and likable sense of character. The Mustang’s power train has a certain allure that engines with fewer cylinders lack, and the car’s innate chassis balance is also rather good.

Sensibility will be damned. The Ford Mustang is still a fairly rad car, despite the fact that its new electric brother has been hogging all the press lately, and Ford is paying it some love by releasing a couple of special-edition ponies for your driving enjoyment.

This GT500 Heritage Edition and the Coastal Limited Edition, both announced on Friday, are single-year limited editions.

The GT500 Heritage Edition paints the already nasty 760-horsepower GT500 in a distinctive shade of Brittany Blue and includes hand-painted or vinyl racing stripes as an option.

Its basic price of a 2022 GT500 is $77,260, which includes a $1,195 destination fee and a $2,600 gas-guzzler tax.

A new GT500 Heritage with Wimbledon White vinyl stripe package will set you back an additional $2,140 ($79,400 all-in), while a Heritage model with hand-painted stripes would set you back a further $2,140 ($79,400 all-in).

Why Do People Love Sports Cars So Much?

Every automobile enthusiast’s goal is to own a sports car. For some, even driving one would be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

But why is that? What is it about sports automobiles that captivate so many people? What makes them so appealing to some people?

They’re pricey, use a lot of gasoline, and have little luggage capacity.

Don’t forget that your sports car will need particular care, including a lot more lavish garage. Seriously, don’t buy a sports car without first visiting a site like A1Garage.com.

But first, let’s return to the title’s question. What is it about sports cars that make them so appealing to people? It’s not only that they’re quick. After all, the majority of us drive SUVs or family cars.

Why You Should Choose Classic and Cheap Reliable Sports Cars

In a world obsessed with technology and innovation, the sports automobile has an iconic allure that is tough to match.

Sports cars are also the polar opposite of our technological fixation. Although we as a society desire more and better technology, we are equally concerned that these advancements would degrade our humanity.

Some have even claimed that we are afraid of losing control of our own advances. The sports automobile shows our technological prowess while also ensuring us we keep control over our creation. They designed sports cars to react to the driver.

Never before has there been such a diverse range of sports vehicles at the lower end of the price spectrum, each giving thrills that rival, if not outperform, their more expensive counterparts.

At this end of the market, it’s not all about brake horsepower. The majority of the vehicles on our top ten list prioritize driver entertainment over sheer, straight-line performance.

But we guarantee that each will put a tremendous smile on your face in some way.
