About Nielsen TV

You can’t choose to become a panelist, you’re chosen to become one (but there are other ways to get paid by Nielsen. The company says every home in the U.S. has an equal opportunity to be selected.
Every year, the company mails one million paper diaries to randomly selected households of families who fit an open demographic.
Homes are chosen using a combination of phone numbers, addresses, and census information that is publicly available on the web.
If you’re one of them, the initial opportunity might come to you in the form of junk mail, through a phone call. It might even come in the form of a door hanger. So keep your eyes peeled.
How Do Nielsen Ratings Work
The most commonly cited Nielsen results are reported in two measurements: ratings points and share, usually reported as: “ratings points/share”.
There were 119.6 million TV homes in the U.S. for the 2017–18 TV season (Nielsen’s National Television Household Universe Estimates).
The number of persons age 2 and older in U.S. TV households is estimated to be 304.5 million. A single national rating point represents 1% of the total number.
How Much Can a Nielsen Family Earn
Some reviewers received about $10 per month, including bonuses for sticking with the program for at least one month ($100). While others said that they were paid about $15 per month per member of their household.

Nielsen Rating Critic
Since viewers are aware of being part of the Nielsen sample, it can lead to response bias in recording and viewing habits. Audience counts gathered by the self-reporting diary methodology are sometimes higher than those gathered by the electronic meters which eliminates any response bias.
Another criticism of the measuring system is that it is not random. A small fraction of the population is selected and only those that accept are used as the sample size.
Is Nielsen safe?
Nielsen Reviewing is perfectly safe as the ratings are recognized by most prime time TV stations nationwide and have become the official TV rating authority in the United States.
The only risk is the physical stress it puts upon the panelists who complain that the pay does not equate to the stress, and also the restriction of movement since panelists are required to spend days watching TV.
