– What is WAN Miniport –
Wide Area Network is a network of telecommunications, used to cover a wide area. The Miniport WAN is a device adapter that the operating system uses to access the WAN. The WAN Miniport is most often used to connect to the Internet via a Point-to-Point protocol over an Ethernet connection.
In Windows XP and later versions, the WAN Miniport driver enables alternate connection methods, such as wireless networking and point-to-point protocol over Ethernet (PPoE) connections to the Internet, enabling WAN connections.
How to Connect Through a WAN Miniport
The WAN Miniport is typically used to establish an Ethernet connection over the Point-to-Point protocol in order to access the Internet.
In essence, you need a working PPPoE connection set up in order to connect through the WAN Miniport. On a Windows operating system, you briefly see the notice “Connecting Through WAN Miniport” when you start the connection.
Go to the “Start” menu, and click on “Control Panel.” You can manage almost anything related to the Windows operating system from the Control Panel.
Click on the “View Network Status and Tasks” link in the “Network and Internet” section. Click on the “Set Up a New Connection or Network” link to start creating a PPPoE connection.
Select the “Connect to the Internet” option, and click on the “Next” button. If you already have a connection, then select the “No, Create a New Connection” option, and click “Next.”
Click on “Broadband (PPPoE),” and enter your user name in the “User Name” text box and your password in the “Password” text box.
Type a name for your new connection in the “Connection Name” text box; you can use anything you want, but it is recommended to use a suggestive name.
You can select the “Remember This Password” option if you don’t want to type the password each time you connect through the WAN miniport. You can also select the “Allow Other People to Use This Connection” option if you want to allow other users to connect through the WAN miniport using your user name and password.
Click on the “Connect” button to create and test the PPPoE connection. If the connection fails at the “Connecting Through WAN Miniport” window, reinstall or update your Ethernet card drivers. You can find them on the CD or DVD that came with your computer or on the manufacturer’s website.
