Did you hear about the Credit Card Outage? Multiple businesses around the country were forced to only accept cash Friday because they were unable to take credit card payments, according to multiple reports. It even caused Chick-fil-A to give out meals for free.

Why Chick-fil-A gave Out Free Meals during a Credit Card Outage

Fiserv, a leading payment provider, told Business Insider that a widespread internet service provider outage was to blame.

“Some Fiserv services that rely on internet connectivity were interrupted. The majority have been restored and we are fully focused on restoring the rest”.

The issue resulted in some Chick-fil-A restaurants reportedly giving out meals for free. Other companies affected by the outage were McDonald’s, Popeye’s, Ikea and Forever 21.

And it wasn’t just retailers. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy also reportedly had issues.

Taxis in Miami-Dade County, Fla., couldn’t process credit card payments, prompting a warning statement from Miami International Airport.

How Chick-fil-A Responded

Chick-fil-A’s payment machines weren’t working earlier in the day, leading it to give out free meals.

Chick-fil-A said the outage involving their restaurants lasted for about an hour before it was resolved. Restaurants are now processing credit card and debit card payments again.

How Chick-fil-A Responded

According to online posts and a Jackson Spalding for Chick-fil-A representative, the issue was with the chain’s third-party payment vendor.

This temporarily stopped credit or debit card payments, as well as caused issues with mobile orders, for roughly an hour.

As such, locations in several cities were only able to cash payments. The issue has been resolved and restaurants are back to operating as normal.
