Sell Your Musical Equipment

Are you looking to sell your musical instrument fast and get the most money out of it? Don’t look further! In this article, we are going to cover the best sites where you can sell your gear for cash.

4 Best Places to Sell Your Musical Equipment

Musical equipment sales can be both lucrative and rewarding. If you are trying to sell music equipment, you have outgrown or liquidate instruments that have accumulated dust in your house, you can let someone else enjoy it while still making some extra money.

You will also be freeing up space in your home or research session.

When you sell music equipment, it is easy to miss dollars, so we have put together a helpful guide to help you plan and sell your music equipment efficiently for a reasonable price.

Best Places to Sell Your Musical Equipment Online

Read below to see the top 4 platforms you can maximize profit with your musical instrument today:

1. Craiglist

One of the best places to buy used gear is, surprisingly not, the best place to sell gear too.

Aside from the ease of use of Craigslist, the number one reason it is the best platform for selling gear is that there are no seller fees. Therefore, whatever money you are selling your equipment for is yours.

Even if somebody gives you a little, less than what you mentioned it originally as you will have it all (rather than getting a fee taken out on sites like eBay and Reverb).

Another advantage does not have to face the trouble of carrying the equipment out. You can easily just get the person you are selling your music equipment to meet you in your house or meet at some shared venue. It takes only a few minutes out of your busy day.

When selling gear online you have to deal with the trouble of buying packaging items, packing the gear properly, and then finding some time in the day to get to the post office or the UPS shop.

Plus, if you haven’t adequately priced your shipping in your listing, you may need to dig into your profit to cover something extra.

Selling on Craigslist is simple, easy, and best of all you get the most value from your gear.

2. Reverb

Reverb is an online auction site close to eBay but designed exclusively for the sale and purchase of music products. Users may sell their used gear via Reverb. They have a great designed site and navigation and usage are very easy.

However, the best thing about Reverb is the very low prices for sellers.

Do not forget about the payment charge for Paypal, which is another 2.9 percent plus $0.30 per transaction, though. Reverb was certainly the best in my experience, with all the other choices out there for selling your gear online.

3. eBay

Obviously, you have heard of eBay before – they are one of the oldest online buying and selling sites out there, and one of the most popular ones.

Selling your music equipment on eBay is none the opposite. It is perfectly safe and easy to use, and chances are within a day or two you will get rid of your gear.

That said, we think with other channels you could probably get a better price.

If you have not used eBay before, this is how it works: you list the item for as long as you think it’s going to take up to 10 days to sell, and if it doesn’t sell within the specified time, you can relist.

You may post three distinct styles of listings. The first is a regular auction, where you set the starting price and from there, buyers can bid.

Then there is an auction-style “reserve price,” which simply allows you to set a maximum bid instead of a minimum (so if the reserve price is not met, the item will not sell).

Finally, if you do not want to deal with the auctioning hassle you can only sell your item at a fixed price.

4. Facebook

Facebook is the social media juggernaut you probably already have on your mobile device and computer. The good news is that with very little effort, you can put Facebook at work for you and help you sell your musical equipment.

Essentially, there are two different ways you can effectively sell your music equipment using Facebook: Facebook Marketplace or, my personal favorite — Facebook groups.

The marketplace operates a lot like Craigslist, where you are putting up a public listing that you can see on your newsfeed and on the marketplace.

You can enter your own title and description for the item or products and add pictures. This is so because your prospective customer can see with their own eyes the condition of your equipment before they purchase.

Then you just list the item in the appropriate category and wait for the offers to roll in.

You can use Facebook groups of musicians in your local region, or even beyond, to post that you are also selling musical equipment if you are willing to take care of shipping.

This can be particularly effective if you have a lot of fellow musicians in your local area.  Since it takes a lot of the guesswork out of buying something online from an unknown face far away.

Very often, these groups are niched down quite well (you can find groups specifically for Eurorack buy/sell, Guitar buy/sell, Synthesizer buy/sell etc)

Final Verdict

Many musicians want to sell their old equipment from Craigslist. You will have a good sale in most cases, and get it done fast. That said, there is some risk that you will encounter a scammer and there is some risk that you will not sell your item at all, because the buyer community is just too limited.

Because it’s free, it’s worth a shot to try selling your old equipment on Craigslist. But we still think you’ll be better off with another platform.

Reverb.com is our favorite online site for buying and selling musical instruments if you have not guessed it yet. Fees are super low, it is secure, and you are going to have access to thousands of like-minded musicians interested in what you are doing.

There’s not much to dislike about using Reverb. Whatever you need to sell, we recommend doing it here.

Once again, using eBay to sell your music equipment is nothing wrong with that. It is healthy, settled and fast. Nevertheless, we do think you are better off with other sites, mainly due to the eBay fees and the problems that come with a listing.

Facebook can be a great additional method to sell your musical equipment.  But it’s best used in tandem with other efforts. If you only want to sell your equipment to people you know.

It’s an even better option, particularly if you belong to the same Facebook groups.

In conclusion, I hope you can start selling with these platforms now, If you really want to hit it big adopt this guide now.
