At the end of a difficult six-kilometer dirt drive, Ki-palm-thatched Ra’s tower slowly emerges. The Caribbean Sea is on one side, and the jungle is on the other. Making it a fascinating spot for swimmers.

There is no beach, but you may reach the warm water by descending steps built into the rocks.

In Tano, Ki-Ra means ‘birthplace of the earth spirit.’ The indigenous Tano were great healers and herbalists, and they were the last people to live on this land.

They designed sanctuary Cap Cana to resemble a beachfront Spanish colonial village. It’s not just because it’s housed in a castle.

Its 323 suites, which include a combination of seaside bungalows and castle rooms. Are tastefully decorated with modern lines, natural wood, stone, and a sprinkling of rattan.

It also has five restaurants (one of which is on stilts over the lake), six bars, five pools, and a golf course built by Jack Nicklaus.

So it came as a shock when Auberge Resorts, a typically Californian company, bought the 30-year-old resort in 2014. But what a difference a new viewpoint makes.

They gave this Caribbean classic new life with lemon yellow and ice-blue walls. Striped dhurries on the flooring, and elaborate glass sconces.

Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, kite-surfing, horseback riding. And outdoor yoga courses are just a few of the activities available around Turtle Cove.

A rum tasting with an in-house “rummelier” is one of our favorite pastimes.
